Since Sandy Hook, there has been over 1000 ‘mass shootings‘ in the U.S. This year alone 2016, we haven’t even finished half of the year yet, there has been nearly 24000 gun violence. On mass shootings this year: there has been 137 mass shootings in America.
Seung-Hui Cho for example murdered 32 innocent people in 2007, claiming a Jesus like desire to “save the down trodden and oppressed”. I don’t remember the media bringing up any of the perpetrators religious beliefs when they went on a rampage killing innocent people.
Does the media really care to stop further mass shootings happening in America and find a solution for it? Or do they only care when the perpetrator is a brown person with a ‘Muslim’ name?
Omar Mateen, friends, family members and his Ex-wife all have confirmed that Omar was not religious, showed no interest in religion, and “had mental health issues“:
Omar Mateen’s former wife says the man responsible for America’s deadliest ever mass shooting was physically abusive towards her, had mental health issues and was “obviously disturbed, deeply, and traumatised”.
Sitora Yusifiy was married to Mateen for four months in 2009 until her family was forced to “literally rescue me” after he kept her “hostage”, she said on Sunday in Colorado.
“In the beginning he was a normal being that cared about family, loved to joke, loved to have fun,” Yusifiy said of Mateen, whom she had met online.
“A few months after we were married I saw his instability, I saw his bipolar, and he would get mad out of nowhere, and that’s when I started worrying about my safety.
“Then after a few months he started abusing me physically, very often, and not allowing me to speak to my family, and keeping me hostage from them,” she said.
She said her family arrived to rescue her from Mateen “and had to pull me out of his arms”.
But relatives interviewed by US media said Mateen, who worked as a security officer and had a wife and young son, was not especially religious.
They did, however, describe a man who had anti-gay views, mental health problems and was physically abusive to his ex-wife.
Tampa Bay Times:
“Seddique Mateen said he thought his son was motivated by homophobia, not by faith. ‘I don’t think religion has any role in what he did,’ the father said.”
University of Alabama criminal justice professor Adam Lankford says, that many of these killers, their underlying motive is not religion, they use religion as a kind of a mask. In reality, many of them suffer from mental health problems:
“Because we realize no matter what he said, the evidence is clear he had severe mental health problems, wanted to die . . . and was just latching onto that ideology to make himself seem more important.”
The Washington Post reported Sunday that Mateen’s former wife said he had regularly beaten her, was mentally unstable and showed little interest in religion.
Will some of the media lead and point out that not every shooting committed by someone with a ‘Muslim’ name is not automatically driven by religion, rather mental health problems?
