A former Concordia student and employee has filed a complaint with the labour board and is suing the Associate Director of Athletics because she says he harassed her after she refused to tell a Muslim colleague to stop praying in the gym.
Rose Tandel says she worked as a first aid instructor and personal trainer at the Concordia gym for four years and a half.
In May 2013, she says the Associate Director of Athletics cornered her, asking her to tell her Muslim colleague to stop praying in a isolated area of the gym.
“The stuff he told me was incredibly racist, he said he wanted nothing Arabic here, that the Charter of Human Rights has no power within the walls of Concordia.”
She says after filing a complaint with the university against him, the Associate Director of Athletics started harassing her and lied that she had been stealing.
Concordia suspended her without pay and banned her from the gym. She says she was forced to quit in January when months of harassment became unbearable.
