When Umar Ibn al-Khattab was a polytheists he used to beat a girl because she was a Muslim. This is reported in Ibn Ishaq (704 – 768 AD):
“He passed by a slave girl of B. Mu’ammil, a clan of B. Adiy b. Ka’b who was a Muslim. Umar b. al-Khattab was punishing her to make her give up Islam. At that time he was a polytheist. He beat her until he was tired and said, ‘I have only stopped beating you because I am tired.’ Abu Bakr bought her and freed her.
