The Daily Mail printed edition have retracted the bogus claim made that “75% of Muslims believe Britain is “Islamic”. The survey that was done, referred to some Asian students in one school who believed that 50 to 90% of Britain was “Asian”. The survey had absolutely nothing to do with Muslims or Islam. The students were asked what percentage of the British population were Asian in Britain, and the Daily Mail ran a misleading headline “75 per cent of Muslims Believe Britain is Islamic”. And then many right-wing online bloggers picked this sham headline up and ran Islamophobic articles against Muslims. This is Daily Mail’s comment from the printed edition on the matter:
“A News story last Sunday said the Casey review into ethnic integration would say that some British Muslims are so isolated they believe up to 75 percent of the country is also Islamic. In fact the review refers to a survey in one school with Asian pupils who believed 50 to 90 per cent of the total British population was ASIAN.”
Miqdaad Versi put a complaint through in which Daily Mail agreed that the headline was misleading and had nothing to do with the survey in question:
“The Mail on Sunday is the latest to be caught and forced to retract its bogus & sensationalist headline about “Isolated British Muslims” after my complaint.
The headline initially claimed that “isolated British Muslims are so cut off from the rest of society that they see the UK as 75 per cent Islamic, shock report reveals” – actually, the report was talking about only one school, and the reference to Muslims was totally unjustifiable!”
