London’s Child Marriages, 1500-1800s

Child marriages has been happening from the ancients of times. Although girls (or boys) who hit puberty weren’t classed as a child when they hit“ puberty”, from the 20th century on-wards things changed. As puberty was the factor for someone to get married, from the 20th century on-wards it was decided on age. The age factor did not look into whether the person hit puberty or it was safe for them to have relations, this was not and has never been discussed.

For example, in many Western countries, one can start have sexually relations (legally) at a very young age, but at the same time the person would not be able to legally drive a car or buy a box of cigarrates. You could join the military at the age of 18 or younger, but still unable to buy alcohol. Not saying that alcohol should be sold, it is a harmful drink and people should stay away from. These examples were given to show how contradictory these set of laws are.

Coming back to child marriages: pre-20th century there was no such thing as “child marriage”, as we understand it today. Girls/boys were deemed to be adults when they hit puberty.

Not long ago I was reading through a book, titled “London Marriage Licences”. I picked up the book just to see at what ages were people married. Were there differences in the age between the male and female? I was shocked to see how young some of the girls were compared to the men. These marriages were all done in Churches. The youngest case of marriage was between a 2 year-old “John” to 26-year-old (widow) Margaret Weston:

The second case of marriage licence given, was between 4-year-old George and a widow (no name given):

The above are just few of the marriages I picked up from the book. There are another 200 similar cases documented further down in this article.

The above examples should be not shocking to our modern readers. These type of marriages were consummated and very common in ancient of times. The Bible and non-Biblical sources have many instances where such marriages were consummated.

King David who was a Prophet in the Bible was 70-years-old when he married 12-year-old Abishag (See here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3)

Moses and his soldiers married prepubescent girls who did not even hit puberty, as the verse, Numbers 31:18 states: “A Detailed Historical Examination Of Numbers 31:18“.

Biblical Prophet Isaac, his daughter, Dinah, was no older than 7-years-old when she was married off to Shechem: “Bible: How Old Was Dinah When She Was Married To Shechem?“.

There is the famous marriage of the mother of Jesus. Mary was 12-years-old when she was married off to 8o – 90 year old Joseph the carpenter. This marriage has been attested by all ancient church fathers: “Marriage of Mary To Joseph the Carpenter!”

Ancient Israelite used to marry off their daughters at a very young age. Isaac was 40-years-old when he married 3-year-old Rebecca, as ancient Rabbis have reported: “Bible: Child Marriage in Ancient Israelite times“.

Last but not least, age of consent in America and Europe in the 1800s was 10 in all countries. In fact, in the state of Delaware the age of consent was as young as 7: “Age of Consent in European & American History” and “The Age Of Consent Laws In America, 1800s“.
