A new campaign called Muslims United for San Bernardino has been created via LaunchGood “to assist victims’ families with funeral expenses and other needs.” In just four days, American Muslims have raised over $100,000 from donors across the country. So far, eighty percent of the current donations have come from American Muslims.

This past year, a similar campaign was created by American Muslims who raised over $100k to help rebuild black churches that were set on fire following the Charleston church massacre.

Teresa Watanabe with the Los Angeles Times reports this campaign has already surpassed the previous fundraiser for burned churches, only several days old with donations of $1,000 coming in by the hour. At the time of this writing, over $112k has been raised, and the campaign will remain open for another 21 days.

American Muslims Respond:
Fundraiser for Victims’ Families

#Muslims4SB

At least 14 people were killed and 17 more wounded in San Bernardino, California where up to 3 attackers went on a shooting spree at a regional center that serves those with special needs. The San Bernardino families lost their loved ones in a deplorable act of violence.  This is why a collective of American Muslim leaders and groups have united to raise funds for the victims’ families.

We wish to respond to evil with good, as our faith instructs us, and send a powerful message of compassion through action. Our Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said: “Have mercy to those on earth, and the One in the Heavens (God) will have mercy upon you.” And the Quran teaches to “Repel evil by that which is better” (41:34).

All fundraising proceeds will help with the immediate, short-term needs of the grieving families. No amount of money will bring back their loved ones, but we do hope to lessen their burden in some way. If we exceed the $50,000 goal, we can even assist the families with long-term expenses or possibly donate to the regional center where the shooting took place. Funds will be distributed to the victims’ families by the MiNDS Network (more on MiNDS below).

We ask for American Muslim mosques, Imams, leaders, and groups to endorse and promote this initiative. Official endorsers of the campaign are only required to help promote it via email and social media. To be added to the list of endorsers, please email tarek.elmessidi@celebratemercy.com. For media inquiries, see the official press release here. The list below will be updated at least twice daily:

Many thanks to our American Muslim communities for these generous acts of kindness, and for living so courageously in the face of continued hate speech/hate crimes, prompted by right wing and religious extremists. You do not deserve such treatment, and many of us will continue to support and fight for your human and constitutional rights. May peace come to all of us.
