A young Australian Muslim woman was allegedly assaulted by a man outside of Melbourne State Library today.
She was allegedly punched twice, tripped over and the man attempted to pull her hijab off her head.
A 16 year old Muslim boy, witnessed the incident, intervened and pulled the young girl away from the attacker only to have a knife thrust in his face.
The attacker fled the scene after the boy’s intervention. Police were called and the young girl was taken to hospital via Ambulance.
The attacker was described as having a strong build, not wearing a shirt and with tattoos across his chest.
The 16 year old boy’s father has contacted us and is concerned about the young girl whose identity is unknown at this stage and the welfare of his son, who is shaken up by the incident. We have referred them to a counseling service.
We are currently investigating this matter and urge any witnesses to come forward. Please contact Islamophobia Register Australia’s Facebook page if you have any relevant information about the incident.
