Women In Christianity

Donate To Discover The Truth

Often it is cited by Christians that they were indeed the first to uplift and introduce the rights of women, in that they gave women a higher standing in society than any other religion. Nothing is more further from the truth, in fact we see throughout history that Christianity has downgraded and mistreated women to such an extent they are considered nothing more than machines that give birth to children. I will point out many different examples on how the Bible and the Church has mistreated women and deprived them of their basic rights.

 1.   The Fall

3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head,  and you will strike his heel.” 16 To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”

I recommend people read whole of Genesis 2: 1-25 and 3:1-23 to get a full image of what happened.

“As part of this doctrine, the church taught that woman was under an especial curse and man a divinely appointed agent for the enforcement of that curse. It inculcated the belief that all restrictions placed upon her were but parts of her just punishment for having caused the fall of man.”

 (M. J GAGE.  WOMAN, CHURCH AND STATE: Chapter 2 celibacy. Page 53)

“Ever since Eve was cursed for seeking knowledge, the priest with the Bible in his hands has pronounced her the most unnatural, untrustworthy and dangerous creation of God. She has been given away as a sheep at the marriage altar, classed with the ox and the ass, cursed in maternity, required to receive purification at the hands of the priest for the crime of child-bearing, her body enslaved, and robbed of her name and of her property.” (Elizabeth Cady Stanton The woman’s Bible Page 196)

A commentator by the name of Calvin says the following:

Adam did not fall into error, but was overcome by the allurements of his wife.” (Elizabeth Cady Stanton The woman’s Bible page 166)

In the above verse it states God blames everything on the woman. It also states that God promises he will make childbearing very painful for every women that comes after Eve including herself as well.

Eve made a mistake; and her punishment was a painful labour and banishment from the garden. So why does it command that all women have to go through pain? The church taught that women are cursed because of Eve’s sin. Even the commentator puts all the blame on Eve.

 2.   Menstruation

Leviticus  19 When a woman has her monthly period, she remains unclean for seven days. Anyone who touches her is unclean until evening. 20 Anything on which she sits or lies during her monthly period is unclean. 21-23 Any who touch her bed or anything on which she has sat must wash their clothes and take a bath, and they remain unclean until evening. 24 If a man has sexual intercourse with her during her period, he is contaminated by her impurity and remains unclean for seven days, and any bed on which he lies is unclean.

25 If a woman has a flow of blood for several days outside her monthly period or if her flow continues beyond her regular period, she remains unclean as long as the flow continues, just as she is during her monthly period. 26 Any bed on which she lies and anything on which she sits during this time is unclean27 Any who touch them are unclean and must wash their clothes and take a bath; they remain unclean until evening. 28 After her flow stops, she must wait seven days, and then she will be ritually clean. 29 On the eighth day she shall take two doves or two pigeons to the priest at the entrance of the Tent of the Lord’s presence.

“In the oldest European churches great distinction was made between the purity of man and woman. At an early date woman was forbidden to receive the Eucharist into her naked hand on account of her impurity.”
(M. JOSLYN GAGE.  WOMAN, CHURCH AND STATE: Chapter 2 celibacy. Page 57)

So the quote from the bible says that if someone sits on a bed where a woman who was menstruating was sat, will make them impure and dirty – Just because she was sat on the bed, this will make someone else impure? This is ridiculous. This was also stated by the church. The quote from M. JOSLYN GAGE states that the Church believed women were dirty, impure.

 3.   Women after Childbirth

Leviticus 12 The Lord gave Moses the following regulations for the people of Israel. For seven days after a woman gives birth to a son, she is ritually unclean, as she is during her monthly period. On the eighth day, the child shall be circumcised. Then it will be thirty-three more days until she is ritually clean from her loss of blood; she must not touch anything that is holy or enter the sacred Tent until the time of her purification is completed.

For fourteen days after a woman gives birth to a daughter, she is ritually unclean, as she is during her monthly period. Then it will be sixty-six more days until she is ritually clean from her loss of blood.

“Paul brought into the new dispensation the influence of the old ceremonial law, which regarded woman as unclean. The Jewish exclusion of forty days from even the outer court of the sanctuary to the woman who had given birth to a son, and of twice that period, or eighty days, if a daughter had been born, was terminated in both religions by a sin-offering in expiation of the mother’s crime for having, at the peril of her own, brought another human being into life. This Old Testament teaching degraded the life-giving principle exemplified in motherhood, and in a twofold way lessened the nation’s regard for womanhood. First, through the sin-offering and purification demanded of the mother; second, by its doubling the period of exclusion from the temple in case a girl was given to the world. The birth of girls even under Christianity has everywhere been looked upon as an infliction, and thousands have been immured in convents, there to die of despair or to linger through years, the victim alike of father and of priest”
(M. JOSLYN GAGE.  WOMAN, CHURCH AND STATE: Chapter 2 celibacy. Page 58 and 59)

Basically the quotes above state that if a woman has a son she is unclean and impure for 7 days. However if she has a daughter she is unclean for 14 days.

4. Rape and forced marriage

Deuteronomy 22:28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

As you can see from the above if a woman gets raped by man and they get discovered he has to pay the father and must marry her. The woman has been violated but yet the Bible commands that the victim marry the rapist.

 hmm

(Source: Hebrew Lexicon for Deuteronomy http://www.scripture4all.org/OnlineInterlinear/OTpdf/deu22.pdf )

Just in case someone says this is a wrong translation as you can see above I have taken a screen shot of the Lexicon.

Grasps means:

  • To take hold of or seize firmly with or as if with the hand.
  • To clasp firmly with or as if with the hand.
  • To take hold.
  • To make a motion of seizing, snatching,
And at the end of the Lexicon it says: “Humiliated her”, if she consented to sex at the first place, why would at the end of the verse say “Humiliated her”, if she consented to it at the first place?

Commentary on the Bible:

The man who raped a girl who was not engaged had to marry the girl and pay her father the bride price of fifty shekels, and he was forbidden to divorce her.

(By Warren W. Wiersbe. The Wiersbe Bible Commentary Page 357)
From all of the above it is clear that this verse is talking about rape. The victim who has gone through this evil ordeal forced into sex has to marry his perpetrator.

 5.   A Wife helping her Husband

Deuteronomy 25:11If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, 12, you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity.

By helping your husband out, so that he doesn’t get hurt. The Bible commands that her hands be cut off for helping. Wow I don’t know what to make of it, just shocked to see this. Instead of saying “well done for helping your husband”, it commands people to cut the woman’s hands off and have no pity.

6.   Forced Marriage

Deuteronomy 25:5:  If brothers are living together and one of them dies without a son, his widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband’s brother shall take her and marry her and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her.

That just goes to show how much the Bible gives rights to women. She has no say whether she likes to get married to the brother or not. The command there is that she “MUST” marry only in the family and no one outside of the family.

7.   Kidnap and rape of woman

Judges 21:20 And they commanded the Benjaminites, saying, “Go and lie in wait in the vineyards, 21 and watch; if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards and seize each man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. 22 And when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we will say to them, ‘Grant them graciously to us; because we did not take for each man of them his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them, else you would now be guilty.'” 23 And the Benjaminites did so, and took their wives, according to their number, from the dancers whom they carried off; then they went and returned to their inheritance, and rebuilt the towns, and dwelt in them.

Just because someone does not have a wife, it doesn’t make it right for these men to go and kidnap and rape these girls. How can these girls be considered wives if they never consented at the first place? If they consented to it then there will be no kidnapping needed at the first place. The Bible commentary says the following on this verse:

The elders held another meeting to discuss how they could provide wives for the remaining 200 men. Somebody remembered that many of the virgins from the tribes participated in an annual feast at Shiloh. If the remaining 200 men of Benjamin hid near the place, they could each kidnap a girl and take her home as a wife. (Warren Wiersbe Bible Commentary Page 473)

What makes me sick about this story is that there is nowhere in the Bible where this is condemned. The Bible has not spoken against this evil thing they did to these girls and thus again the Bible shows how much rights it gives to women.

  8.  More Rape of women

Judges 19:20-25:  “You are welcome at my house,” the old man said. “Let me supply whatever you need. Only don’t spend the night in the square.” 21 So he took him into his house and fed his donkeys. After they had washed their feet, they had something to eat and drink.22 While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him.”23 The owner of the house went outside and said to them, “No, my friends, don’t be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don’t do this outrageous thing. 24 Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But as for this man, don’t do such an outrageous thing.”…. the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go.

As you have read from the above some evil men wanted to rape the guest I.E the MAN. But the old man said no that is not right; here rape my daughter and his concubine. This is the way women were treated before. Instead of closing the door and letting no one in and protecting everyone he offered his daughter and his concubine to get raped.

 9.   Daughters Inheritance

Numbers 27: The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They came forward and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said, “Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against theLord, but he died for his own sin and left no sons. Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”

5 So Moses brought their case before the Lord, and the Lord said to him, “What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.

“Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”

As you have already read chapter 27 in Numbers. This is the closest we get for a daughter to get Inheritance, to own the father’s property. But there is a condition, if the father has “NO SON”, the daughters can have the inheritance, if he has a son the daughters won’t get anything. There is not one verse where Jesus said anything about daughters getting the right to inherit property. It took 2000 years nearly for women to get the right to own the father’s property if he passed away. Islam gave that right to the daughter 1300 years ago.

10. Upright woman

Ecclesiastes 7:26-28

I find more bitter than death the woman who is a snare, whose heart is a trap and whose hands are chains. The man who pleases God will escape her,  but the sinner she will ensnare….I found one upright man among a thousand, but not one upright woman among them all.

 11. Woman: divorce rights

Mark 10:12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”

Corinthians 7:39 A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes…

Romans 7:2-3 …By law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him. So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.

If you look in the above passages a woman cannot divorce her husband unless he commits Adultery read the verses before Mark 10:12 you will see. If a woman gets attacked, abused, beaten. She cannot divorce her husband if she does: – she would be called an adulterous. The verse in Corinthians emphasizes on this matter again that the woman is bound to her husband for rest of her life and in Romans it can’t get any clearer that a woman cannot divorce her husband unless he dies otherwise she will be a called a Adulterous. Where is the right for woman? So when she gets abused, tormented tortured by her husband, she cannot do anything but faithfully sit there and get slapped, beaten by the husband.

 12. Woman not allowed to speak

1 Corinthians 14:34 Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says.

Mathew Henry Commentary of the Bible says the following:

The apostle 1. Enjoins silence on their woman in public assemblies and to such a degree that they must not ask questions for their own information in the church, but ask their husbands at home. They are to learn in silence with all subjection: but, says the apostle Paul “I suffer them not to TEACH, 1 Timothy 2:12:  I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet….. A teacher of others has in that respect a superiority over them, which is not allowed the woman over the man, nor must she therefore be allowed to teach…  (Mathew Henry’s commentary acts to revelations page 583)

13.  Woman not allowed to Teach

1 Timothy 2:11-12 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.

Very nice verse indeed!! A woman is not allowed to teach? The following commentary on the Bible says the following:

Woman must learn the principles of their religion, learn Christ, learn the scriptures; they must not think that their sex excuses them from that learning which is necessary to salvation. They must be silent, submissive, and subject, and not usurp authority. The reason given is because Adam was first formed, then Eve out of him, to denote her subordination to him and dependence upon him; and that she was made for him, to be a help-meet for him. And as she was last in the creation, which is one reason for her subjection, so she was first in transgression (2 cor: 11:3), and that is another reason . Adam was not deceived, that is not first.; the serpent  did not immediately set upon him, but the woman was first in the transgression, and it was part of the sentence , Thy desire shall be to thy husband and he shall rule over you Genesis 3:16.
(Mathew Henry’s commentary acts to revelations page 813)

John Calvin commentator of the Bible goes further:

“Let a woman learn in quietness. After having spoken of dress, he now adds with what modesty women ought to conduct themselves in the holy assembly. And first he bids them learn quietly; for quietness means silence, that they may not take upon them to speak in public. This he immediately explains more clearly, by forbidding them to teach.  But I suffer not a woman to teach. Not that he takes from them the charge of instructing their family, but only excludes them from the office of teaching, which God has committed to men only — what is closely allied to the office of teaching — and not to assume authority over the man; for the very reason, why they are forbidden to teach, is, that it is not permitted by their condition. They are subject, and to teach implies the rank of power or authority. Yet it may be thought that there is no great force in this argument; because even prophets and teachers are subject to kings and to other magistrates. I reply, there is no absurdity in the same person commanding and likewise obeying, when viewed in different relations. But this does not apply to the case of woman, who by nature (that is, by the ordinary law of God) is formed to obey; for γυναικοκρατία (the government of women) has always been regarded by all-wise persons as a monstrous thing; and, therefore, so to speak, it will be a mingling of heaven and earth, if women usurp the right to teach. Accordingly, he bids them be “quiet,” that is, keep within their own rank. For Adam was first created He assigns two reasons why women ought to be subject to men; because not only did God enact this law at the beginning, but he also inflicted it as a punishment on the woman. (Genesis 3:16.) He accordingly shews that, although mankind had stood in their first and original uprightness, the true order of nature, which proceeded from the command of God, bears that women shall be subject. Nor is this inconsistent with the fact, that Adam, by falling from his first dignity, deprived himself of his authority; for in the ruins, which followed sin, there still linger some remains of the divine blessing, and it was not proper that woman, by her own fault, should make her condition better than before….Now Moses shews that the woman was created afterwards, in order that she might be a kind of appendage to the man; and that she was joined to the man on the express condition, that she should be at hand to render obedience to him. (Genesis 2:21.) Since, therefore, God did not create two chiefs of equal power, but added to the man an inferior aid, the Apostle justly reminds us of that order of creation in which the eternal and inviolable appointment of God is strikingly displayed. And Adam was not deceived He alludes to the punishment inflicted on the woman: “Because thou hast obeyed the voice of the serpent, thou shalt be subject to the authority of thy husband, and thy desire shall be to him.” 43 (Genesis 3:16.) Because she had given fatal advice, it was right that she should learn that she was under the power and will of another; and because she had drawn her husband aside from the command of God, it was right that she should be deprived of all liberty and placed under the yoke.” ( John Calvin Commentary on Timothy, Titus, Philemon Page 50,51 and 52)

It wasn’t until the 19th century with all the women standing up and wanting their rights. Before that in Christianity no women was allowed to teach they were subjected to be silent and his man rule over her.

14. Below The quotes are from Women’s rights movement the leading leaders of the 19th century who fought for women’s rights. Without these courageous remarkable women: there wouldn’t be any freedom to teach, to own inheritance. To keep their own money what they earned. I think a lot of women in the west Christian or not Christian owe these women a lot of gratitude, appreciation. It was not Christianity that brought the status of women up in the western society it was these women. Their names are Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Matilda Josyln Gage and there many more, but these two are more known.

(A) Church taught that woman had no souls:
“These old Christian theologians found the nature of woman a prolific subject of discussion, a large party classing her among brutes without soul or reason. As early as the sixth century a council at Macon (585) fifty-nine bishops taking part, devoted its time to a discussion of this question, “Does woman possess a soul?” Upon one side it was argued that woman should not be called “homo;” upon the opposite side that she should, because, first, the Scriptures declared that God created man, male and female; second, that Jesus Christ, son of a woman, is called the son of man. Christian women were therefore allowed to remain human beings in the eyes of the clergy, even though considered very weak and bad ones. But nearly a thousand years after this decision in favor of the humanity of the women of Christian Europe, it was still contended that the women of newly discovered America belonged to the brute creation, possessing neither souls nor reason. As late as the end of the sixteenth century an anonymous work appeared, arguing that women were no part of mankind, but a species of intermediate animal between the human and the brute creation.”

(MATILDA JOSLYN GAGE.  WOMAN, CHURCH AND STATE: Chapter 2 celibacy. Page 56)

(B) Thanking God that he wasn’t born a woman
“Paul’s conversion did not remove his old Jewish contempt for woman, as shown in his temple service, the law forbidding her entrance beyond the outer court. Nor could he divest himself of the spirit of the old Morning Prayer which daily led each Jew to thank, God that he was not born a heathen, a slave or a woman.”

(MATILDA JOSLYN GAGE.  WOMAN, CHURCH AND STATE: Chapter 2 celibacy. Page 58)

(C) Women had no rights
“Nor is woman herself scarcely less bound, although now torn by the spirit of rebellion which burned in the hearts of her fore-mothers, so cruelly persecuted, so falsely judged, during past ages, when the most devout Christian woman possessed no rights in the church, the government or the family. The learning which had been hers in former periods, was then interdicted as an especial element of evil. Her property rights recognized in former periods then denied; as a being subordinate to man she was not allowed a separate estate or control over the earnings of her own hands. Her children were not her own but those of a master for whose interest or pleasure she had given them birth. Without freedom of thought or action, trained to consider herself secondary to a man, a being who came into the world not as part of the great original plan of creation but as an afterthought of her Creator”

(M. J. GAGE.  WOMAN, CHURCH AND STATE: Chapter 2 celibacy. Page 63)

(D) Priests taught women are of the devil

woman was defiled through the physical peculiarities of her being. Even her beauty was counted as an especial snare and temptation of the devil for which in shame she ought to do continual penance. St. Chrysostom, whose prayer is repeated at every Sunday morning service of the Episcopal church, described women as a “necessary evil, a natural temptation, a desirable calamity, a domestic peril, a deadly fascination, and a painted ill.” But to escape her influence was impossible.”
(M. J. GAGE.  WOMAN, CHURCH AND STATE: Chapter 2 celibacy. Page 74)

(E) Church forced wives to desert their husbands

“The most severe punishment fell, but upon innocent women and children. Effort was made to force wives to desert their husbands. Those who proved contumacious were denied christian burial in an age when such denial was looked upon as equivalent to eternal damnation; property left such wives was confiscated to the church; they were forbidden the eucharist; churching after childbirth was denied them; they were termed harlots and their children bastards, while to their sons all office in the church was forbidden. If still contumacious they were handed over to the secular power for condign punishment, or sold as slaves for the benefit of the church. They were regarded as under the direct control of Satan himself, as beings who iniquitously stood between their husbands and heaven.”

(M. J. GAGE.  WOMAN, CHURCH AND STATE: Chapter 2 celibacy. Page 82)

(F) Listen to your Husband in every way

“The general tenor of the church against marriage, together with its teaching of woman’s greater sinfulness, were the chief causes which undermined the morality of the christian world for fifteen hundred years. With these doctrines were also taught the duty of woman to sacrifice herself in every way for man”
(Matilda. J. Gage, Church state and Woman)

When Christians say that women are always treated in Christianity with equal rights throughout history that is a complete lie. All you have to do is read the Bible and History and you will see how women were ruled and controlled like animals. They didn’t have any rights what so ever.

 (G) Christian Church by Paul…

The doctrine of woman the origin of sin, and her subjection in consequence, planted in the early Christian Church by Paul, has been a poisonous stream in Church and in State. It has debased marriage and made both canon and civil law a monstrous oppression to woman.

(Elizabeth Cady Stanton The woman’s Bible Page 163 and 164)

(H) Women’s property under Church law

“Under church law, woman’s property, time and services were all at the husband’s disposal. Woman was not rescued from slavery by the Reformation. Luther’s ninety-five theses, nailed upon the church door in Wittenberg, did not assert woman’s natural or religious equality with man. It was a maxim of his that “no gown worse becomes a woman, than that she should be wise.” A curious old black letter volume, published in London in 1632, declares that “the reason why women have no control in parliament, why they make no laws, consent to none, abrogate none, is their original sin.” The trial of Mrs. Anne Hutchinson, in the seventeenth century, was chiefly for the sin of having taught men. To-day, in free America, a wife cannot collect damages for in-jury to her person by a municipality. Legally her husband owns her person; and he alone can collect damages if the wife is injured by any defect or mishap for which the administration of the municipality is responsible. This was tested in the Court of Appeals in New York in 1890. The judges decided that “the time and the services of the wife belong to the husband, and if she has received wages from him it was a gift.” Thus the spirit and the intent of the church law to make the wife a servant of the husband, subject to and controlled by him, and engrafted in common law, is a part of statute law operative in these United States to-day.” (Elizabeth Cady Stanton The woman’s Bible Page 164)

(I) Women were not allowed…

“No more stupendous demonstration of the power of thought can be imagined, than is illustrated in the customs of the Church for centuries, when in the general canons were found that “No woman may approach the altar/’ “A woman may not baptize without extreme necessity/’ “Woman may not receive the eucharist under a black veil.” Under canon 8i she was forbidden to write in her own name to lay Christians, but only in the name of her husband; and women were not to receive letters of friendship from any one addressed to themselves.” (Elizabeth Cady Stanton The woman’s Bible Page 168)

(J) Property

“Under canon law, wives were deprived of the control of both person and property.Canon law created marriage a sacrament “to be performed at the church door,” in order to make it a source of revenue to the Church. Marriage, however, was reckoned too sinful “to be allowed for many years to take place within the sacred building consecrated to God, and deemed too holy to permit the entrance of a woman within its sacred walls at certain periods of her life.” (Elizabeth Cady Stanton The woman’s Bible  Page 168)

(K) Law of Moses and Paul degrade women…

“women ought to demand that the Canon law, the Mosaic code, the Scriptures, prayer-books and liturgies be purged of all invidious distinctions of sex, of all false teaching as to woman’s origin, character and destiny.” I believe that the Bible needs explanation and comment on many statements therein which tend to degrade woman. Both the law of Moses and the teachings of Paul, thus considered, belittle woman more than they exalt her.”  (Elizabeth Cady Stanton The woman’s Bible Page 185 and 187)

(L) No will of her own

“The Bible—both the books of the Old Testament and of the New, express the views in regard to woman which prevailed when those books were written ” The conception in regard to woman was that she was naturally mans inferior, that her position should be one of subordination,  that she should have no will of her own, except as it was in accord with that of her father, husband, or master. The idea of woman’s equality with man in all natural rights and opportunities finds no support in the Bible.” (Elizabeth Cady Stanton The woman’s Bible Page 190 and 191)

(M) Woman’s inferiority and subjection

“In Genesis the Bible strikes the key-note of woman’s inferiority and subjection; and the note rings true through every accepted and Rejected book which has ever constituted the Bible. In the face of this fact, the supreme effort of the Christian Church has been to inculcate the idea that Christianity alone has elevated woman, and that all other religions have degraded and enslaved her. It has feared nothing so much as to face the truth.” (Elizabeth Cady Stanton The woman’s Bible  Page 194)

(N) Women owe their advancement to the Bible?

“No institution in modern civilization is so tyrannical and so unjust to woman as is the Christian Church. It demands everything from her and gives her nothing in return. The history of the Church does not contain a single suggestion for the equality of woman with man. Yet it is claimed that women owe their advancement to the Bible. It would be quite as true to say that they owe their improved condition to the almanac or to the vernal equinox. Under Bible influence woman has been burned as a witch, sold in the shambles, reduced to a drudge and a pauper, and silenced and subjected before her ecclesiastical and marital law-givers. “She was first in the transgression, therefore keep her in subjection.” These words of Paul have filled our whole civilization with a deadly virus, yet how strange is it that the average Christian woman holds the name of Paul above all others, and is oblivious to the fact that he has brought deeper shame, subjection, servitude and sorrow to woman than has any other human being in history.

Christianity has instilled into woman the canting falsehood that the women of all other religions are degraded and immoral. Through tyranny and falsehood alone is Christianity able to hold woman in subjection.( Elizabeth Cady Stanton “The woman’s Bible” Page 205 and 207)”

Conclusion: From the entire evidence above women were deprived of their rights in Christianity. Christianity did degrade women. The Church was a lot worse; the women weren’t even treated as humans. The Bishops, Priests had debates about whether women had souls? I think the evidence above I brought was enough that women were second class and they weren’t treated as Humans. Just to finish off. I personally wouldn’t have made an article like this. But due to some missionaries trying to degrade Islam and saying that women Islam have no rights and so on. I said to myself, it is only right to write an article like this and show their book and what it really says about women.

  1. Aassalamu’ Aalaikum.

Brother, please write a blogpost on Conditions of Women in Pre-Islamic Arabia with historical and religious references. As Christians often claim that Before Islam women had rights which was curtailed later. I know this is a lie, but lay Muslims gets trapped by missionaries.
