Unfortunately, the now defunct Charter of Values continues to create division.
Sunday, my partner and I were leaving the Renaissance store in Verdun when we overheard a man loudly berating two timid-looking Muslim women waiting in line behind him. Since my French is poor, I couldn’t make out everything he was saying, but his tone and bullying manner made his viewpoint clear.
This incident saddened and angered me. My partner wanted to intervene, but I was worried about our safety so we simply left the store. In hindsight, my inaction sickens me. My partner later said that sometimes you have to stand up for what you believe in. If you don’t, then the racist bigots win. Lesson learned.
