Does the Bible Teach child Abuse, ‘Beat him with a rod?’

Donate To Discover The Truth

In this article we are going to examine Bible passages which encourage child abuse and other things that are related to the topic. The Biblical Book of Proverbs contains many passages which approve of beating a child with a rod. The book of Proverbs is not the only place in the Bible where it encourages such atrocious acts. There is a lot of evidence that beating a child physically has long-term physical and psychological damage.

1. Bible: To become a follower of Jesus you must hate your children
.

Luke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

2. Bible: Disobedient children must be put to death

Exodus 21:15 Whoever strikes his father or his mother is certainly to be put to death.

Exodus 21:17 Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.

Leviticus 20:9 Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death. Because they have cursed their father or mother, their blood will be on their own head.

Matthew 15:4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’

3. Biblical verses, instructions how to beat a Child

Proverbs 29:15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

Proverbs 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Proverbs 19:18 Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

Proverbs 13:24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.

Proverbs 23:13-14 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

As we have read we see that the verses all teach, and encourage beating children. Not only that but also, if you do not hate your children you cannot become a follower of Jesus. The command of Jesus is made very clear, in order to become his follower you have to hate your children.

Coming back to the topic of child abuse:- Take for example Proverbs 23:13-14 it says, ‘Do NOT withhold correction’, meaning do NOT withhold back from beating a child. It says then, if you beat him with a rod (STICK) he will not die but live. Towards the end of the verse it commands that you beat him with a stick. It is due to these verses in the Bible that many children have died. I cannot comprehend even imagine how these children must feel when going through these horrific, barbaric acts the Bible encourages.

There are Christians (missionaries) out there that want to reform their Religion and make it more pleasing to non-Christians, they have tried to change the meanings of Proverbs where it encourages beating a child. They say, ‘the words that are used such as ‘Beat’, actually does not mean that, but show ‘love’. Since when is the word ‘beat’ meant ‘love’?

4. Interpretation of ‘Beat’ & ‘Rod’ in Proverbs by Christian Experts

Peter Muffet A commentary on the whole Book of Proverbs says:

Parents are now admonished to correct their children, and moved hereunto by the declaration of the great benefit which they shall procure unto them by using the rod, and chastening them according to their deserts. ‘Withraw not chastisement from the child;’ neither altogether withhold correction from that youth that deserveth the same, nor correct him too seldom or too sparingly. ‘When thou shalt smite him with the rod he shall not die.’ When thou shalt moderately chasten him with a twig or wand thou shalt only cause his flesh to smart, but not kill or slay him; for a rod will break no bones. ‘Smite him with a rod, and thou shalt deliver his soul from hell.’ Scourge him with moderation, and he by his means being amended, will not afterward deserve temporal or eternal death, but shall be preserved by the stripes which he hath received from the grave and destruction. The cockering of parents is the very cause that divers children come to the gallows, and the correction which wise fathers and mothers exercise their sons and daughters with, is the means whereby divers others are saved from sin and the punishments thereof, yea, and oftentimes from the very place of execution. [1]

Professor Moses Stuart A Commentary on the Book of Proverbs (1852) says:

The Child, with the article which refers to the child of the person addressed: and so with the rod, i.e. the appropriate rod of a teacher.-.. has the same sense of CHASTISEMENT here…. [2]

Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible:

Verse 13-14
While there is little danger that the use of the “divine ordinance of the rod” will produce bodily harm, there is great hope of spiritual good. [3]

The Book: ‘A Proverb a Day Keeps the Devil Away’ written by Dr. Philip Ayers says:

“The same principles are true for parents. We must apply strict rules and consequences for our children, or they will run from us when the opportunity comes. WE MUST SPANK OUR CHILDREN AT TIMES. THE WORLD CALLS THIS UNUSUAL AND UNACCEPTABLE PUNISHMENT: CORPORAL IN NATURE. GOD CALLS IT DIVINE LOVE. Genuine affection for children will not withhold corporal punishment. Parental discipline will produce Godly virtue, parental joy, and blessed children. [4]

Natalie A. Francisco:

….discipline, then you must step up (as judge and prophetess Deborah did when she accompanied Barak to war in Judges 4:4-9). You can fill in the gap by disciplining the children when needed rather than putting it off until your husband steps up (which may or may not happen). Notice what the scripture says, which puts more onus on mothers than you might think: Proverbs 29:15 ‘The rod and rebuke give wisdom, but a child left to himself brigs shame to his mother. Correct your son, and he will give you rest; Yes, he will give delight to your soul.’ Proverbs 23:13-14 also tells us: ‘Do not withhold correction from a child, for if you beat him with a rod, he will not die. YOU SHALL BEAT HIM WITH A ROD, and deliver his soul from hell.’ YOU HAVE THE WHEREWITHAL TO DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD BECAUSE GOD HAS ALREADY GIVEN YOU STRENGTH AND THE WISDOM OF HIS WORD TO RISE TO THE CHALLENGE WITH YOUR HUSBAND OR IN SPITE OF YOUR HUSBAND. [5]

J. C. a Christian commenting on Proverbs says: ‘Spanking is not child abuse’, read it for yourselves:

….To withhold discipline from a child will result in a confused, chaotic and unhappy life for that child. Regardless of the pseudo-Psychology being spewed from the unwise, a human child needs discipline to mature into a successful member of society. SPANKING A CHILD IS NOT ABUSE …IT IS A COMMANDMENT FROM GOD THAT HELPS SUBDUE OUR EVIL NATURE AND RESTORE SOME SEMBLANCE OF A HEALTHY LIFE. NEGLECTING TO DISCIPLINE A CHILD IS THE GREATEST LONG-TERM ABUSE ANY PARENT COULD INFLICT. [6]

5. Apocrypha

There are two additional verses that encourage child abuse. Protestants might say:- ‘we don’t accept Sirach, because it is an apocryphal book’. According to them since it is apocryphal book, it is not reliable, fake. But that is incorrect; the word Apocrypha originally meant ‘Hidden or secret’. Sirach was always accepted part of the canon and there are over a billion Christians today that still accept it as scripture. I have already written on the word ‘Apocrypha’ and the experts (Christians) will give you the original meaning of it. Click on the Link below for more Info:

6. More verses on Child abuse from the Bible

Sirach [Ecclesiasticus] 30:1He who loves his son will whip him often, so that he may rejoice in the way he turns out. He who disciplnes his son will profit by him, and will boast about him among acquaintances

Sirach [Ecclesiasticus] 30:12 Bow down his neck while he is young, and beat his sides while he is a child, lest he grow stubborn, and regard thee not, and so be a sorrow of heart to thee.

Could you believe what you are reading? Sirach encourages/commands that you beat a child’s sides while he is young. So, that in the future the child doesn’t ‘grow stubborn’ as their Scripture states. By beating a child it wouldn’t make things better, but worse and the child might even in worse cases commit suicide from such beatings. Commentary on the verse, Professor John J. Pilch says:

Proverbs and Sirach exhort fathers to punish sons physically because they are considered basically evil and need strong correction if the father does not want to suffer neglect and abuse later in life (Prov 13:24; 19:18; 22:15 23:13-14; 29:15, 17, 19; Sir: 30:1-13). [7]

It is quite clear from reading all the evidence that the Bible encourages violence against children.

7. Jesus came to fulfil the Old Testament Law & commanded his followers to teach/Practice it

Before a Christian says, “Old Testament verses are not to be followed because we are now under a ‘New Covenant’”, they are wrong. Jesus made it abundantly clear that he did NOT come to abolish any Law of the Old Testament but to fulfil it. All the verse mentioned are still applicable today because Jesus never came to abolish any law. Jesus says:

Matthew 5:17 (GWT) “DON’T EVER THINK that I came to set aside Moses’ Teachings or the Prophets. I didn’t come to set them aside but to make them come true. 18 I can guarantee this truth: Until the earth and the heavens disappear, neither a period nor a comma will disappear from the Scriptures before everything has come true. 19 So whoever sets aside any command that seems unimportant and teaches others to do the same will be UNIMPORTANT in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever DOES AND TEACHES WHAT THE COMMANDS SAY WILL BE CALLED GREAT in the kingdom of heaven. 20 I can guarantee that unless you live a life that has God’s approval and do it more faithfully than the experts in Moses’ Teachings and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

As you have read Jesus makes it evidently clear that he did not come to abolish anything but to fulfil it. Not just that, but also said: ‘whoever sets aside any command that seems unimportant to them. They will be unimportant in the Kingdom of Heaven.’ In other words he/she will not enter heaven for not following the commandments in the OT. Jesus further said, ‘whoever follows the commandments and teaches it will be called ‘great in the kingdom of heaven’. Jesus praises and loves those who follow and practice OT Law. Christian (missionaries) won’t be able find one verse in the entire 4 Gospels, Jesus ever hinting/saying to people not to follow the Old Testament Laws, it does not exist. Jesus never abolished anything, but encouraged/commanded his followers to follow/practice the Old Testament Laws.

8. Long-term Psychological damage to children

This section we are going to bring evidence that beating a child has long-term Physical and Psychological damage according to the experts. Professor Murli Desai says:

Physical abuse is often used for disciplining the child and results in physical injuries as well as psychological damage. (Winton and Mara 2001). Beating a child causes pain, injury, humiliation, anxiety, anger and vindictiveness that could have long-term psychological effects. It may reduce a child’s sense of worth and increase vulnerability to depression. Even minor forms of violence can cause injuries, and in the worst case permanent disability and even death. Children subjected to repeated violence may exhibit dysfunctional behaviour such as poor communication and they may display aggressive behaviour towards themselves and others. Child abuse and physical punishment can produce feelings of guilt, violation, , loss of control and lowered self-esteem. sometimes the child may not clearly understand the reason for the punishment, or the punishment is inconsistently given, and in these cases, corporal punishment can lead to passivity or strong feelings of helplessness. While biological and various social factors interact in contributing to a child’s development, studies show that child abuse and physical violence in early years contribute significantly to a higher risk of children turning violent themselves. (UNICEF 2001). [8]

Professor Colin Pritchard, Research Professor in Psychiatric Social Work in the University of Bournemouth also echoes the same statements:

“Physical abuse is the most commonly recorded type of abuse, and it is easiest to define, observe and take action against this kind of maltreatment. Severe bruising and fractures caused by blows, head injuries, shaking, eye damage, suffocation, poisoning, marks made by sticks, whips and cords, marks of burning, biting and scalding are the most extreme examples (kemp et al. 1985; Meadow 1993). While these extreme forms of physical abuse may not effect more than 2 per cent of the population, ‘ordinary’ physical discipline in the form of frequent smacking and hitting is much more frequent, and can also cause long-term harm…..” [9]

9. Discipline VS Punishment

Most experts would agree that spanking (mildly) a child on the bottom is not abuse. But when passages shown earlier encourage beating a child with a ‘rod’ (stick), and further saying they will not die, now that is abuse, or the other Biblical verse (Sirach), where it commands that you beat the sides of your child so that he/she respects you when they grow up, that is abuse. This kind of discipline as Christians call it should not be tolerated in any shape or form. Nobody is discouraging parents from disciplining their children. We need to discipline our Children in order they thrive as individuals. As parents we need to set boundaries and structure in the Childs lives. However discipline does not necessarily mean punishment. As parents we can discipline children without even laying a finger and they could still be happy/healthy, and well-behaved.

we can see the Bible encourages abuse, beating a child black and blue is ‘OK’ according to Christian scripture. What makes it even more worrying to me is how Christian today still encourage/command other Christian to abuse their children. They might sugar coat it and say it is only ‘correction when the child is naughty’. Even if the child is naughty, they still have no right to hit them with a stick. A Child should be brought up with love, not constant beating so that he/she submits to their tyranny. As we examined the passages, I gave scholarly evidences that this is a command. I also gave two Professors views on this type of abuse commanded in the Bible, and the implication of the child in the future, going through such ordeals, both of the Professors acknowledged, made it clear that beating a child has long-term Physical and Psychological damage.

  1. Reblogged this on God is not Triune and commented:
Does the Bible Teach child Abuse, ‘Beat him with a rod?’

  2. Kaleef,

    1. What does the hebrew word translated as ‘rod’ in English, actually mean? Can you please provide all the possible meanings according to the Hebrew? Does it always mean an actually physical rod as you imply?

    2. “Christian (missionaries) won’t be able find one verse in the entire 4 Gospels, Jesus ever hinting/saying to people not to follow the Old Testament Laws, it does not exist”

How about Mt 19:7-9; ““Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?” Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

Why did Jesus change the Mosaic prohibition of Deut 24:1-4? Woops, guessed you missed that one Kaleef?

Frankly, your (mis)understanding of Old Covanent fulfillment is appauling.

    • Hi Paulus

      Thanks for your comment.

      1. According to BlueletterBible.org the word ‘rod’ has the following meanings:

rod, staff, branch, offshoot, club, sceptre, tribe
      rod, staff
      shaft (of spear, dart)
      club (of shepherd’s implement)
      truncheon, sceptre (mark of authority)
      clan, tribe

      2. I have no issue(s) with Jesus (p) abrogating laws, we have this same thing in Islam. But one thing Jesus did not say is he abolished all the laws from the OT.

      • Rod is translated to shabbat, which refers to a rod used by a shepherd with sheep. Never to hit the animal but to gently prod and guide or to protect the sheep from a predator

  3. The “rod” refers to our parental authority, that we are commanded to chastise (beat) with our authority to train our children. The result of imparting knowledge will give our children wisdom, which in turn will save their lives. “For if you beat him with the rod, he will not die. You shall beat him with the rod, and shall deliver his soul from hell.”

  4. With all due respect, Mr. Karim, you are mistaken about the apocrypha canons having “always been accepted,” and about several points referenced in the Bible. The apocrypha is not recognized by the Protestant Christian church as being the divinely inspired Word of God. It is recognized only by Catholics. Therefore, an argument to debunk certain scripture passages in the Bible loses credibility if it’s support relies in part on quoting from the apocrypha. You use secondary sources (commentary on primary sources) to support your bashing of Christians, which is not a scholarly method to undergird your argument (I can find secondary sources to support any argument in the world). A clear understanding is required of the Hebrew and Greek languages from which English translations of the Bible derive expression and, unless one is a Bible scholar in these tongues, arguing contexts is a slippery slope. Every religious scroll has things that can be twisted out if context to “prove” a perspective, whether the Torah, the Bible, the Koran, the Doctrine of Covenants, Pearl of Great Price, ad nauseum. I would start with an earnest reading through the Bible’s Book of John, asking God to enlighten your mind to His truth as you do so: this truth is that He is Love and Grace, in spite of ourselves, He Loves us. We can do nothing to merit this Love, He gives it freely to all who ask. He Loves us. Utterly and completely. He does not ask us to hurt our children nor to hate them; those words come from the Father of Lies – in whom there is no truth. Clearly you are intelligent: do not let yourself be deceived. My words make no difference, as I also am only a secondary source. The words in John, if you ask earnestly for them to come alive to you, are the words that matter. Thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts on all of this.
    -B. Mitchum

  5. Our prisons are filled with men, angry, and out of control, many who admit being beaten as a child. Did it help them? Or did it change them to harden their hearts? In Biblical days, as in slavery, one act of disobedience could result in death. Today, we do not have that fear. Beating, whipping, whatever you call it, is the lazy way to discipline. It’s swift, and over, and a parent can go about their business.
Removing TVs, phones, privileges , takes more time from the parent, and are forced to hear complaints, and whining, for days.
Time to live in this century, and take an educated approach to discipline. Physical abuse from the ones who are supposed to love you changes you, and not for the good.

  6. Eventually if one reads the bible without the guidance of the holy spirit you will translate or indicate the word of god in your own thought, only to defame the lords name! Repent and then read the bible, it will be more clearly next time. God bless

    • Really getting bored of all this ‘holy spirit’ nonesense. ‘When’ i keep asking (myself) ‘will christians grow enough reason to reject this blatant notion’.Guess i never can tell,Hope is never out of contention.
Wondering what my reason is for the words above….You neednt wonder far.Below i state them
1.If the holy spirit(which supposedly is the third member of the Godhead) is not so infallible as to protect the gospel writers from errors of misrepresentation(a claim well evidenced by matthew 27v9-10,mark 1v2,the contradiction as well as clash of prophesies between Acts 1v18-19 and Matthew 26v47-50 and the inconsistensies of paul ), what proof else do we need that it(the holyspirit) is only an irrational ‘chronicle’ in the minds of many? Besides, how really can it save Bro Khaleef from the very misinterpreatation you accuse him of?
      2. Considering the contrasts between the holy spirit and jehovah such as that of the concept of mercy(mind you the mercy of the holyspirit is well painted in the episode of Ananias narrated in Acts), how reconciliable are these differences?
What else could i end with but the words ‘And woe unto them who write by their own hands a book and then say this is from Allah so that they may make little gains thereof…..’

The God of this world has blinded so many from the truth! The only thing that can set you free.

  7. [Sorry for the mistakes. English is not my main languge, I’m Brazilian]. If I had a child, I’d punish him with a rod. However, I’d hit him only if he had disobeyed The Bible, I wouldn’t hurt him, and I’d explain the reason of my behavior. Each person can choose between two paths: the good one or the evil. A child is too ignorant to make such choice. I’d try to keep mine in the good path until it completes 14, 15 or 16 years of age, when it would probably have capability of choosing wisely between serving Jesus or not.

The Bible doesn’t say to hate your children. It says to love God more than anything. It also tells us to don’t abuse while scold. Now, I don’t remember the sermon’s location, but it tells us to have patient and not to lose our mind while we punish our children. Thank you for the attention. God Bless you.

  8. Plain and simple, spank your kids, it’s not “atrocious”, it’s what the bible teaches. Parents 25 years ago that started saying no no, are the reason gay marriage, abortion, crime rates are the way they are.

  9. The Bible does not teach child abuse. There is a stark difference between abuse and discipline. When we are born, we arrive here with the sinful adamic nature. We are bent towards evil and some evils are more dominate than others. With love and careful attention, you can notice a child’s evil behavior and if left unchecked, that foolishness will remain bound in his heart just as proverbs teaches. When you spank or hit that flesh, that child re-thinks his actions. With love and a Godly wisdom, and the absence of provoking a child, you make teach and make him/her aware of the consequences of his wrong actions! That’s exempllifing love. You lve them enough to drive that hell out of them. Part of the evil we see from our generation today is we have left the true teachings of the scripture and as a result of not using the rod of physical discipline, our children are growing up in a society with that foolishness and “bent” from the norm of respect, morality, and all sorts of evil behavior in their heart! If we don’t beat our kids, the officials will. Abuse is provoking and beating your kids with severe mental effects. If you beat a kid and dont’t exemplify love as to why afterwards, that’ abuse.

  10. Stupidity at its highest, God wants us to correct our children, not abuse them, you have no idea what the Word says at it is only discerned by a true believer, the words you are reading do not mean what you are saying. Look at the Old Testament how often did anyone get stoned even thou the law said to. God will always show mercy where it is asked. For your blasphemous words you just spoke he should according to U kill U on the spot since he is so mean and teaches abuse. Look up precilla and Aquila, that would be you accept for
The Cross of Jesus taking your sin and giving us the Grace of God. Get saved and u will truly understand the word of God. Look at Jesus and you will know what God is like. Loving but truthful and just.

  11. 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables 12 so that,

“‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,
    and ever hearing but never understanding;
otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’[a]”

Love your children as God loves his children and we’ll be on the right track. Discipline is necessary to walk the narrow path. For the gate to life is narrow, and difficult to reach.

  12. I don’t promote spanking mainly because all the research on it, across the board, says it causes resentment toward the parents, and it doesn’t work. It works out of fear if the child represses his resentment and rebellion, but it does him a disservice due to the repression. Studies show that consequences are much more effective. Kids receiving consequences will ask for spankings instead because they’re easier and quicker. Parents like to spank because it’s a quick outlet for their anger, appeasing it.

Spanking in the Bible is likely a translation issue and a misunderstanding of the sayings of the Ancient Hebrews. Our translators in America are about 50 years behind those in Israel, and they’ve made leaps and bounds in translation work in the last 50 years.

“Rod,” to the Ancient Hebrews, means leadership
“Discipline” means to teach through training, not to beat or give consequences. It’s gentle teaching through example
“Punish” means to prune, which is helpful, not hurtful

To an Ancient Hebrew, reading those words was a part of their culture and sayings. They would’ve understood exactly what the author is talking about. However, that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t talking about spanking. It could’ve been. But we don’t know all of their sayings. So their way of expressing disciplining a child may have sounded like a beating to us, but to them meant something different.

Also, keep in mind that if the word “beat” is being understood correctly, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s talking about hurting the child in an abusive manner. It’s strickly talking about spanking, and probably not in a harsh way. There’s a verse that says not to harm anyone and to be gentle with them. A spanking on the bottom doesn’t harm the child. It just causes a little bit of a sting. You have to be careful not to use too much force. But personally, I don’t spank at all. Consequences are much more effective.

My point is that it’s hard to know for sure what the Bible’s talking about. And remember that Solomon was an extremely corrupt king for much of his reign, so we’re not sure if all of his sayings are quite so wise. Who knows… But at least we know there are much better ways of disciplining children than spanking.

  13. Hello dear.
No mean to offend you however if can’t interpreted the Bible Please do not do so. Because i do not know your intention but few people who come across this article could miss interpret the Bible verses.
I appreciate if you did not do interpret the Bible the way you do, because you are going against jesus words, manipulating his words.

    God bless you, thank you.
    Have a good day.

  14. I came across this article by accident and i must say i have never seen such an uneducated piece of work. I am sure you meant well but when you spew such poison towards the word of God there are those who will defend it. To fully understand the bible first of all you must seek its truth otherwise they are just whatever u interpret it as. The old testament cannot be understood unless one has the knowledge of the new testament in his heart. Man is not in a position to question or dispute God in anything. How can the clay ask the potter what are you making me into? The pride of self is the foundational sin from where all other sin has emerged. I invite you to read the new testament and ask God the creator to open your heart and your mind to recieve its message. Then when you read the old testament you will understand what you are reading

  15. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️😂😂😂😂😂😭😭😭
This article was so ridiculous, I couldn’t believe anyone actually wrote it. I mean seriously… do some research before misquoting and misrepresenting the Bible. You don’t have a clue. Very carnal. All of this just made you look dumb. Really dumb.

  16. The author doesn’t understand the bible, has not studied aramaic, hebrew, or even greek. Pathetic anti christian rhetoric for the blind and rebellious.

  17. Well my dear friend you are misunderstanding most of the things and words said, beating wit a rod doesn’t imply to a child abuse, it doesn’t even mean beating up your child to make him/her suffer, and as for the article abt the people who beat their children to death its out of their rage, God never commanded anyone to beat anybody not children not other people not even your enemy. And as for cursing your parents, and should be death.. it simply means that you curse your parent, the people who brought you to this world, who give u life n whose blood is running in your veins, indirectly you are cursing yourself.. n curse has never been good, u do bad u received worse n u curse, ur being curse back…

  18. Meaning of the verse in the simplest way i can give, so u can actually understand what exactly the verse mean.. i hope it helps..
“Thou”-Thou and thee, or (plural) ye and you
“shalt beat”-To strike (lightly or severely, literally or figuratively)
“him with the rod,”-A scion, i.e., (literally) a stick (for punishing, writing, fighting, ruling, walking, etc.) or (figuratively)
“and shalt deliver”-To snatch away, whether in a good or a bad sense.
